Learning to Climb Empty
PostSubject: Learning to Climb   Learning to Climb EmptyThu Apr 05, 2012 6:30 pm

The sun was high overhead, but the massive treetops blocked out most of the light that day. Jabari was avoiding lessons with his father, dashing from tree to tree, and having fun at his private game of eluding the others for a brief time. While Shinikizo's attention was focused on Ziko, the darker cub used this opportunity to slip away. He seldom refused training, for fear of upsetting the older lion whose moods were unpredictable, at best, but he wasn't a fan. It was a lot of work, and rather dull. The cub had no idea what would happen to him if he didn't do just as Shinikizo requested. Would he be sent back to the Lowlands? This option would be preferred, but Jabari knew the likelihood of returning to his mother and other siblings there was not great. No, he assumed Shinikizo would deal with his defiant cubs with claws splayed. He hadn't laid a paw on either of the boys yet, but Jabari had seen enough to worry that he might, and the image of his father threatening Shani would remain in his memory for the rest of his life. There was no forgetting that moment.

The cubs were merely a pawn in Shinikizo's quest to prove himself to his dead father, another aspect that would help him when he defeated Ismahel to become the king of the Coldlands. At least, that's what Shinikizo thought would happen, but the fates knew otherwise. Jabari had heard everything Nyota and Duara said accusingly to his father... How he had used Shani, that he was dishonest, and Jabari found it impossible to trust the lion himself. But in the Coldlands, the cubs were being raised by their fathers, so his situation was not unique. It seemed all the lionesses lived in the jungle, while the lions lived here instead. This was very strange to Jabari. Were all cubs born in the Lowlands, or was it just a coincidence that he, Ziko, and even Sakitu had all lived there before?

The trees in the mountainous region were quite different from what Jabari was used to in the jungle. In the Lowlands, the trees were mostly palms, or odd and rubbery. They weren't impossible to climb, but it took a certain level of skill that Jabari had never acquired there. In the Coldlands, however, the bark was perfectly suited for tiny claws like his, and he had a naturally ability for climbing. That day, the cub was looking for something, and his amethyst eyes flitted among the branches and leaves for the perfect spot. Jabari wanted to find a tree so tall, no one would be able to find him hiding in it. Though most of his fellow pride mates had snowy white fur that camouflaged them in parts of the cold kingdom, little Jabari's fur was brown. His dark fur matched the hue of the bark on the trees, which made hiding within the branches a simple trick for Jabari. He was still so young that his weight had little affect on even the skinny, weak limbs near the top of the trees.

Finally, he spotted a towering tree that he did not know the name of, and a grin appeared on his pale muzzle. It would be the perfect hiding place from the rest of the pride, should he ever need a moment alone. Wasting no time, the cub positioned himself at the base of the tree, looking almost like he was hugging it. His needle sharp claws fell from their sheaths and Jabari began to shimmy up the tree with a remarkably quick pace. He climbed until he reached the first branch protuding from the trunk, which was wide enough for him to lay on without much worry of falling off. Inching his way out onto the limb, he looked down with a satisfied smirk. Who would think to look for him here?

Learning to Climb Empty

Despite what Shinkizo thought, Ismahel loved the little cubs that belonged to the other lion. They would make good friends for his own son to grow up with. He was moving across his lands as he always did and headed toward the hunting grounds. His head was slightly lowered as he made his routine patrols through the lands. His son was back at the caves and asleep. Ismahel knew he would probably need to find food soon for the cubs that lived inside of his lands now. He had smelled the scent of a lioness as well, but had not seen her. He could not help but to wonder who she was. His tail flicked idly on occasion as he padded through. There was hardly a sound amongst the white and snow. Hardly anything lived up here and Ismahel knew that only the hardiest of lions could survive here. His blue eyes shifted back and forth. He had yet to see or even smell the other cub, but he would probably spot him soon enough, or perhaps not at all.

Ziko was still in a sour mood - even after this time - that his mother had let him be taken away to the Coldlands with their father. He wasn't very fond of his father, even less so since it seemed that their father was trying to train them up for something. Ziko was an active cub, meaning tha the didn't mind the training but he was wondering what him and his brother were being trained for. Ziko had already come to like Sakitu as he'd known him in the Lowlands, and now he liked Ismahel. He was a good and just King whom was incredibly kind, un-like what Shinikizo had spoken to his mother. He had come to believe his ex-Queen's words, Duara and Nyota, that he was a lying lion who tricked their mother into loving him. He didn't like that his mother was sad, even if she had given them up. He knew that he was to young to understand why she had given them up, and so he tried not to think about it no matter how much it hurt him. Ziko sniffed the air, searching for his brothers scent. He liked his own company, but at the moment he felt the need to vent to his brother about their most annoying situation. Another familiar scent hit his nostrils along with his brothers, but he couldn't pick it out. He was unsure if it was Ismahel's, Sakitu's or Shinikizo's. He just knew that it was one of them.

He trotted along happily, following his brothers scent through the snow. He spied Ismahel up ahead and was relieved it was him and not Shinikizo. In an attempt to sneak up on him, he padded through the snow quietly and crouched down, watching Ismahel's tail before he pounced on his tail with a playful growl.

Learning to Climb Empty

Up in the tree, Jabari felt big. He was no longer the helpless cub bullied by his father in the name of training. He was larger than life, and safe. Minutes passed as Jabari relaxed up on his private perch, enjoying the solitude while it lasted. Before long, the white king of the Coldlands was spotted in the distance, walking closer to Jabari's tree. A little grin appeared on the cub's muzzle as Ismahel approached, never glancing up to see the brown cub perched above. Shortly after, trailing along behind the adult male was a smaller snowy white cub, and Jabari had to squint to see if it was Prince Sakitu or his own brother. Once he realized it was Ziko, and saw that the white cub was ready to pounce on Ismahel's tail, Jabari decided it was time to come down from his secret place.

Only the descent from his branch did not go quite as smoothly as climbing to it. Jabari's claws slipped through the bark, and he lost his hold almost immediately. The cub fell directly into snow piled at the base of the tree, and for a moment, he disappeared entirely within the white fluff. Then his dark head poked out from the hole the impact of his body had created in the snow, and his amethyst eyes were wide open with surprise. "Whoa!" was all he could utter, still thoroughly astonished by how far he had fallen, and how little it had hurt to land in the snow drift. After about thirty seconds of being stunned, Jabari finally climbed out and shook his pelt to rid his fur of the snow. "That was fun!" He craned his neck to look up at the branch again and laughed. Cheating death was a thrill.

"I saw Ziko coming and I was going to stop him and protect you, King Ismahel!" Jabari beamed, proud of his noble intentions, even if all had not gone according to plan. It had not been Shinikizo who instilled in his cubs the idea that it was his duty to protect his kind, so likely it had been Shani. Jabari wasn't certain, all he knew was that the king protected the cubs, and someday, it would be his turn to protect Ismahel and Sakitu.

Learning to Climb Empty

As the white king continued along, he felt a sudden tug upon his tail. Ismahel turned his head back to see the little cub had pounced on it. A smile stretched upon his maw before he heard something fall into the snow. Immediately he turned to see Jabari poke his head out from the pile of snow. It was a good thing the snow was there to cushion his fall! Ismahel was about to ask if Jabari was alright when the cub had seemed to enjoy it and tried to give an explanation. Ismahel just gave a sigh and looked back to Ziko and then back to Jabari, "Maybe so, but you better be careful. Perhaps you should not climb so high. The snow may not always be there to protect you." He said to the cub as a warning before looking to Ziko. Ismahel then flicked his tail, hoping to lightly hit the cub with it in an attempt to play. He was very glad these two cubs were around to give his son someone to play with.

Learning to Climb Empty

Ziko was pleased as his paws captured Ismahel's tail and he growled playfully. Ziko much preferred the company of their King to their father's, as Ismahel was very kind. He didn't think that what his father had spoken was true, Ismahel would not have murdered their sisters. But then, maybe he would have. Ziko didn't like that thought, and would rather his sisters were safely positioned in the Lowlands where they could not be placed in harms way. Ziko fell into the snow after his jump and popped back up, beaming at Ismahel before he too heard a thump.

He looked over to where he heard it and saw Jabari now hurrying over to them, spewing nonsense that he could've stopped Ziko. Ziko chuckled at his brother and went over to nip playfully at him. "You're silly, you were to far away to stop me! Im a mighty lion," Ziko informed his brother playfully. "And you're just a little cub!" He added as an after-thought. Ziko was then hit in the head by Ismahel's tail and he laughed and went over to sit on Ismahel's paw. "That wasn't very nice!" He exclaimed with a pout on his face. He looked around curiously. "Where's Sakitu?" He wondered aloud.

Learning to Climb Empty
PostSubject: Re: Learning to Climb   Learning to Climb EmptySun May 13, 2012 2:46 am

Discipline was something the cub sorely lacked, since he couldn’t stand to be around his own father, so he brushed Ismahel's warning off with a laugh. The fall had not injured him, so there was no lesson to be learned, for Jabari was the type who only learned the hard way. It would take a nasty spill to convince him to stay out of the treetops, but after that day, he would be more careful and such a fall would not occur. Thus, Jabari fancied himself to be rather unstoppable. His name meant "brave," and it was aptly chosen for the reckless youth he was turning into.

The dark cub grimaced at Ziko's comments about being just a little cub. "We're the same size, dumbie!" He cried out, an annoyed expression appearing as he swiped at his pale brother's nose, but without his claws. "I'll show you what just a little cub can do!" With as vicious a snarl as he could manage, the cub threw himself with all his weight at his brother, hoping to knock him to the ground and pin him there. If there was one thing Jabari couldn't stand, it was feeling weak. At least with Ziko, the two were evenly matched since they were the same size. His thoughts flashed to his father, whose failed attempts at training had only pushed the cub further away, and Jabari nipped at his brother's tail, for a moment losing his playfulness in a slip of anger towards their sire.

Learning to Climb Empty
PostSubject: Re: Learning to Climb   Learning to Climb EmptyTue May 29, 2012 6:33 pm

Ismahel was going to have to speak to Shinikizo about Jabari not listening to his elders. Of course, he did not want to tell the other lion how to raise his cubs, since Ismahel would not want it done to him. He had flicked Ziko with his tail who mentioned how not nice that was, "Oh, you know I was playing!" He said as the cub sat on his paw. Ismahel lowered his head down to nudge the young cub playfully and gently. It was then Jabari seemed upset and had attacked his brother. Ismahel stepped back to let the two just duke it out, as brothers tend to do. His tail swished back and forth as he watched. He heaved a sigh, just wanting to make sure right now that the two were not going to try to hurt each other. He certainly hoped Jabari was not truly angry, but he could not read minds. Sometimes he wished he could so this could make being a king a whole lot easier, but alas, he could not and he was going to have to do the best he could. Perhaps he should go wake up Sakitu, so he could come and play with the two cubs. It was good that his son had other cubs to play with. He flicked his tail idly. If things got too out of paw, he would certainly go and break it up. For now, he knew that their play fighting was only honing their skills for the future, and thus he somewhat encouraged it.
